Description



he Mechanical Properties Lab Engineer will coordinate all the activities within the lab.



The candidate will need to lead a team of three SBU Lab Technicians in the Mechanical Properties Lab, establishing workflow and work distribution guidelines.



This will entail reviewing and logging in incoming work and assuring the quality of the lab output.



The engineer will train the lab personnel on testing techniques and reviewing their aptitude on a regular basis.



The candidate will also need to coordinate calibration of the equipment and keep records to prove routine verifications of this calibration.



The candidate must have a thorough understanding of metals, and a basic understanding of polymers.



They should enjoy working with their hands in a lab environment.



They should be able to apply their knowledge to suggest testing methods and fixturing, for the testing of materials.



The engineer will coordinate with the machine shop to produce test specimens and test fixtures and act as the liaison between the lab and the Materials & Sustainability Engineering community.



 



Requirements



Bachelor of Science degree in Material Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Polymer Engineering from an ABET Accredited University.



0 to 5 years of experience working in a materials engineering lab performing Rockwell hardness, Brinell hardness, durometer testing, tensile and compression testing, scratch/mar testing, abrasion testing, torsion testing, impact testing, and micro-hardness testing.



They should understand ASTM and ISO testing methods for the mechanical testing of materials.



The candidate should have good communication skills, with excellent technical writing skills and clear spoken English.



The understanding of Microsoft Office Suite software is a must.



Be able to run the equipment listed in the qualifications.



Years of experience- 0 to 10



 



Preferred Qualifications:



Master of Science or PhD degree in Material Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Polymer - Engineering from an ABET Accredited University.



Knowledge of other testing techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy and metallography is considered a plus.



Utilization of these skills will be employed as a secondary function.
